If your loved one spends their life travelling around the globe, jumping from one time zone to the next to the point where they’re not sure what time of day or night it is, may we recommend Patek Philippe’s timeless solution, the 5930G World Time Chronograph. The iconic Swiss watch manufacturer has been making world-time watches since the 1930s, but this latest model is the first to incorporate a chronograph alongside a function that shows the time in 24 time zones at once. A white gold case, a blue hand-finished circular guilloché dial and an automatic in-house movement combine to give this watch its unique global perspective.
There is no more powerful status symbol than a Rolex. And among Rolexes there is no more iconic piece than the Datejust, which on launch in 1945 became the world’s first automatic water-resistant chronometer wristwatch. The style has endured over the three-quarters of a century that has passed since, while the engineering has taken quantum leaps forward so that today it will survive anything you can throw at it. This 31mm ladies’ version is a statement piece nonpareil. Its 18-carat yellow gold case and ‘President’ bracelet and diamond setting are given a lush hue by a vivid green malachite dial.
Audemars Piguet is known first and foremost for its Royal Oak, one of the finest sports watches ever designed. This year, the family-owned watchmaking giant introduced an all-new line, the Code 11.59. Designed and developed from the ground up by Audemars Piguet’s in-house team of watch designers and watchmakers, it is a new icon for the 21st century, a piece for the stylish gentleman whose focus is on what is to come, rather than what has been. This Code 11.59 Selfwinding Chronograph offers a 41mm 18-carat rose-gold case, a black lacquered dial, an automatic movement with a flyback chronograph function, and a black alligator strap.
Fifteen years after it exploded onto the watch market, Hublot’s Big Bang shows no signs of fizzling out. Far from it, in fact, as this bold, convention-defying Big Bang One Click King Gold Blue Diamonds piece demonstrates. Starting from the centre, the satin-finished sunray blue dial is set with an unusual 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 numeral layout, while 42 diamonds sit on an 18-carat King Gold bezel and 39mm brushed and polished case. Even the strap has its quirks – it’s made of blue rubber but lined with alligator. The ‘One Click’ system means you can change that to something poppier still in a flash, should the mood take you.
Italian design, Swiss engineering and somewhere in between a whole lot of magic have made the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Middle East Limited Edition one of the all-star watches of our times. Not only is the design distinctly Bulgari (the Octo shape is lifted from an octagonal motif found at Rome’s Massentius Basilica), it’s also come to be home for some of the most spectacular mechanical movements ever created. This 40mm titanium Octo Finissimo Skeleton holds a skeletonised hand-wound movement – a Bulgari invention – that features a small seconds and an indicator for its 65-hour power reserve, and yet is a mere 2.23mm thick. The whole watch is super-slim, too, coming in at a smidgeon over half a centimetre deep. Breathtaking.
